The Amish are renowned for having quality workmanship, and while this is as a general rule, true, and for the most part any Amish product tends to be of a better quality, not all Amish products are created equal. And this is especially true when it comes to portable buildings, or storage sheds.
When you go to a storage shed dealer, you need to be aware that while the buildings may be built by the Amish, the Amish are building them to the specs provided to them by the dealer, and ultimately, it is the dealers responsibility to provide quality control. While there are differences in the general quality from one Amish builder to another, there are also quality differences from one dealer to another even if they use the same Amish builder, as the builder will build the buildings to the specs of the individual dealer. So, you need to know if the building is built to the state building code. For example, Virginia requires that storage buildings be built with pressure treated floor joists, however, many shed dealers in Virginia don't have pressure treated floor joists as a standard feature. So you need to ask, Does the shed or building some standard with pressure treated floor joists, or is this extra?
Another thing to keep in mind when shopping for a building is how much information does the dealer give you up front? Does the dealer tell you that you will have to get a building permit from the county if the building is over a certain size, or that on a larger building, the county may require that you put in concrete footers? And then there is the issue of delivery and setup. Does the dealer charge extra for delivery? How about setup, will the dealer block and level the shed, and if so, does it cost extra?
With these things in mind, you need to know that getting an Amish built shed is the lowest cost per quality option for a storage shed and also for many other types of buildings, especially on the east coast. In Virginia for example, there is a shed dealer, Capitol Sheds, that offers higher quality options than many of the other shed and building dealers in Virgina. They offer standard pressure treated floor joists, a 50 year high performance flooring, and other innovative features as well as a 10 year overall warranty.
Watch for more here, I will be writing features on some of the various unique cost effective buildings that you can have the Amish craftsmen build for you.
